Essentialization / Essence

On Common Ground with Essence

Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata hosted an inauguration of SEMAT India Chapter on June 4, 2014. The inauguration included two events: (1) a SEMAT Executive Committee meeting and (2) Tutorial on "Essence - A Foundation for Software Development Games" by Dr. Mira Kajko-Mattson and Dr. Ivar Jacobson. This interview was conducted during Dr. Jacobson's visit.

A thinking framework in the form of an actionable kernel.

This article presents a thinking framework in the form of an actionable kernel, which could benefit any team wishing to balance their risks and improve their way of working.

A Cover Story in CSI Communications

The first tangible result of the SEMAT initiative is what is known as the kernel for software engineering. This kernel can be thought of as the minimal set of things that are universal to all software development endeavors. Read the article to learn more about SEMAT and the power of providing a common kernel for software engineering practices and methods (the "M" in SEMAT).

Kernel and Language for Software Engineering Methods

  • The OMG ESSENCE standard has helped guarantee consistency across the board for all software development projects
  • It helps create a learning organization by providing a solid basis and framework for the discussion and integration of learning
  • It helps the teams in their daily work to measure progress and health; and it helps Munich Re in scaling agile

Thinking, Communicating and Collaborating Using Essence

Ivar Jacobson International provided a three-day workshop on the Essence standard to the development team at a large multinational corporation specializing in Internet services. Learn about our Essence training and what the team thought.

Software Development Moves from a Craft to an Engineering Discipline

This equipment vendor needed to move from a traditional waterfall approach to an agile way of working. They decided to engage with Ivar Jacobson International (IJI) to assist them with their agile transformation. IJI was chosen because of its expertise in large-scale agile transformation and its thought leadership. SEMAT’s Essence and IJI’s sustainable change model were central to the equipment provider’s agile transformation strategy and success.

Munich Re Transforms Application Development with Lean and Agile Practices

Agile and lean ways of working adopted in a development organization spread across multiple time zones - highly adaptable way of working provides "just right" level of support for projects with diverse needs and varied risk profiles.

A New Software Engineering

What happened to the promise of rigorous, disciplined, professional practices?

The term paradigm shift may be a bit overused these days; nevertheless, the kernel-based Essence approach to software engineering can quite reasonably be considered to be such a shift. It truly represents a profound change of viewpoint for the software-engineering community. In this paper, Ivar Jacobon and Ed Seidewitz explore what happened to to the promise of rigorous, disciplined, professional practices for software development, like those observed in other engineering disciplines and explain how the Essence standard is the answer.

Combining agile and SEMAT yields more advantages than either one alone.

Combining agile and SEMAT yields more advantages than either one alone.

This paper discusses how two current popular movements complement one another to provide a powerful basis for software development.

Power of Checklists_Neil Armstrong Glove

The immense power of simple check-lists for monitoring projects

Surgeons, astronauts, airline pilots and software professionals. What do all these people have in common? Well, for one, all of these professionals are very highly trained – in most cases in takes many years to reach a point where you can practice without supervision.

But even highly trained, experienced professionals can have a bad day, and make the occasional mistake. The problem is, if you’re an astronaut, airline pilot, or surgeon, and you make a mistake, lives can be lost. Software development, perhaps, is somewhat less life-critical, most of the time.

Simple checklists can help reduce human error dramatically. Some reports suggest that surgical checklists introduced by the World Health Organization have helped reduce mortality rates in major surgery by as much as 47%. Neil Armstrong had a checklist printed on the back of his glove (pictured), to ensure he remembered the important things as he made history as the first person to walk on the moon.
